We’ve all heard the recommendation of drinking a glass of red wine can contribute to bettering your health. But what does that really mean? Most of us have jumped on the wine-wagon to partake in more red wine consumption cause it’s supposed to be good for us. Well that is a yes and no situation. Multiple studies have found that wine production from a variety of different red grapes developed high levels of antioxidants. Here is a breakdown of those compounds.
Red wine contains several antioxidants, with the most well-known one being resveratrol. Here's an explanation of some of the key antioxidants found in red wine:
- Resveratrol: Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol found in the skin of red grapes, which are used to make red wine. It has received significant attention for its potential health benefits. Resveratrol is believed to have antioxidant properties, helping to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. It has also been studied for its potential to support heart health and reduce inflammation.
- Flavonoids: Red wine contains various flavonoids, including quercetin and catechins. These compounds have antioxidant properties and are known for their potential to reduce oxidative stress in the body. They may contribute to the cardiovascular benefits associated with moderate red wine consumption.
- Anthocyanins: These pigments give red wine its deep red color. Anthocyanins are antioxidants that may help protect cells from damage and have potential anti-inflammatory effects.
4. Proanthocyanidins: These are another group of polyphenolic compounds found in red wine. Proanthocyanidins are thought to have antioxidant properties and may play a role in promoting cardiovascular health.
It's important to note that while these antioxidants are present in red wine, the health benefits associated with red wine consumption are most often observed in moderate amounts (typically one glass per day for women and up to two glasses per day for men). Excessive alcohol consumption can have negative health effects, so it's crucial to enjoy red wine in moderation. Additionally, the health benefits of red wine should not be used as a sole reason to start drinking if you do not already consume alcohol.
On that note, there are three grapes from Greece that produce higher levels of antioxidants such as Xinomavro, Agiorgtiko, and Mavrodaphne. Below is a link to some of our Greek wine selections that have higher levels of antioxidants. And as the Greeks would say, "Stin Ygeia Sas" (To Your Health)
