As wine acquisitions are happening rapidly around the world, we are beginning to see this taken place in Greece as well. Methodical changes in Greece's wine industry are marking the start of a new era for wine production in the country. The first major acquisition that took place not too long ago was Kir Yianni Estates taking over the legendary Domaine Sigalas. Now Ktima Alpha, one of Greece's leading wineries and a three-time recipient of the 50 Great Greek Wines award, announced that it has acquired the historic Boutari Winery in Santorini from Premia Properties, which had owned it in recent years. The deal was finalized on September 13, 2024. This acquisition, following extensive negotiations, fulfills Ktima Alpha's long-held goal of establishing a presence in Greece's top wine-producing region. This is the second major acquisition in Santorini.
The winery's expansion into both PDO Amyndeon and PDO Santorini marks a pivotal moment for Ktima Alpha, as it continues to shape the future of Greek and international wine production. Angelos Iatridis, a pioneer and visionary of his area, mentions that as a viticulturist he enjoys and welcomes challenges. He also shared plans for a major restructuring of the winery’s operations on the island, a move that he sees as essential to meeting the unique and interesting challenges Santorini presents.
This new approach for Greece’s wine industry can definitely provide healthier growth potential while maintaining the quality and integrity of the wines. Greece’s wine industry has always been challenged with weak infrastructure, inexperience, and lack of funds and resources. But over the last 30 years, significant changes and development have elevated Greece’s position as a high quality producer in the global market. The future becomes brighter and brighter for Greece, especially when it starts in Santorini.
